Every refusal letter sets out its reasons. Read enough of them and the same handful of grounds keep reappearing. Here they are, along with what to do differently.

The Money Looks Wrong

This is the most common ground by some distance, and it splits into two very different problems.

The first is straightforward: not enough money. You fall short of the roughly AUD 29,710 living-cost benchmark, or you’ve covered living costs but forgotten first-year tuition and travel.

The second catches people who thought they were ready. The amount is fine, but the officer doesn’t believe in it. Funds deposited days before lodging. A term deposit locked up with no early access. A sponsor whose declared income couldn’t plausibly have produced the balance on the statement. A cousin with no obvious reason to be paying for your degree. Show money that has been there a while, and show where it came from.

The Genuine Student Answers Fall Flat

The second big category. These refusals usually come from answers that are generic, that contradict something else in the file, or that skate past an obvious question about the applicant’s history. A long gap since your last study. A course with no connection to your previous degree. A step down in qualification level. A course available at home for a quarter of the price.

You don’t fix this with better adjectives about Australia. You fix it with a specific, consistent explanation of why this course, why now, and what happens next.

English Problems

Scores under the threshold for your course level, results that have expired, or a test taken through a channel that isn’t accepted. Online and at-home sittings don’t count. It has to be in person at an approved centre.

Gaps and Contradictions in The Paperwork

A missing CoE makes an onshore application invalid outright. Beyond that, remember that a decision can be made at any time once you’ve lodged, so a file with gaps can simply be refused rather than held open while you chase documents. Contradictions between documents chip away at your credibility even when every one of them is innocent.

Documents That Aren’t Real

The most serious category and the hardest to come back from. Doctored bank statements, bought test results, invented employment letters. These lead to refusal and can trigger exclusion periods that affect future applications. That includes documents an agent prepared for you. You signed the application, so you carry it.

Health and Character

Usually either an incomplete medical or something undisclosed in your history. Disclose everything. Non-disclosure is treated far more harshly than whatever you were trying to keep quiet.

If you Have Already Been Refused

Your letter explains the reason and whether you have review rights. Resist the urge to relodge immediately with the same weakness intact, because the previous refusal will be sitting there in plain view. Work out precisely what failed, fix it properly, and get a registered migration agent to review the new application before it goes in.
